We’re moving to Columbia for this post.
and focuses on the show that inspired over a dozen other countries to remake it.
Yo Soy Betty, La Fea is a Columbian soap opera that aired in 1999 to 2001. It is massively popular and inspired over a dozen other countries to remake it. One of those remakes was the American version, Ugly Betty.
I am shocked that I didn’t know this show existed, and I can’t wait to watch it.
LIVE COMMENTARY FOR YO SOY BETTY, LA FEA
Woah, it starts off with a first-person view. This is weirdly disorienting, but I like it. Everybody is cringing at her as they walk by.
The production is pretty good too. Nothing wild, but the sets are clean. It’s shot much like an American soap opera in terms of lighting and composure.
The episode starts off with Betty walking into her job interview at EcoModa, a fashion company. I think it’s a double interview because she walks in with another woman. Naturally, the other woman is a beautiful blonde model.
I like telenovela Betty better than American Betty. Despite equally fleek brows, telenovela Betty’s bangs are 10/10, and her glasses are super hipster. Really, she’s just a trendy lady.
Don’t believe me?

Okay, well I was grabbing that picture, Betty’s interview finished. I think she got rejected. As she leaves, a woman drops a piece of crumpled paper on the ground. Her boss walks by and, while I don’t understand Spanish, practically gives her a death threat for dropping this paper. Just a real angry fellow.
I keep noticing that synthesizer music beds often paly under people talking and, while you could probably argue that there can never be too much synth, it’s distracting.
Now death threat guy is walking through a factory floor. I guess in Yo Soy Betty, La Fea, it might be a clothing manufacture instead of a fashion magazine.
Back at Betty’s house, she starts reading a magazine about the company.
HAHAHA. There’s a big stuffed Bert from Sesame Street on Betty’s bed.

Also, Betty’s laugh is amazing… it’s one of those up breath laughs.
A big chunk of the episode explains who all the employees are at EcoModa. There is a lot of dialogue, and I didn’t understand most of it. It revolved around a work party.
DRAMA BOMB – The woman who had her interview with Betty is in one of the pictures from the event…
Wow, I’m proud of myself for figuring this one out.
The blonde haired woman is named Patricia. I’m 90% sure she’s at this party because her friend is married to the president of the company (aka death threat guy). She is trying to schmooze the president to give her a job as his secretary. I guess that is the job that Betty applied for too.
Ohhhhhhhhh, Patricia’s friend wants death threat guy to hire Patricia, because she wants her to make sure he isn’t cheating on her at work. The flashbacks end.
Betty gets a call back from the EcoModa.
Now, I could have written that last sentence in all caps to really emphasize how excited I am that betty got the job, but it’s one of those TV series moments that obviously was going to happen. If she didn’t get the job, there would be no show. So duh, she got the job. Moving on.
Betty goes in for another interview, and the episode ends with the president (aka death threat guy forever) deciding who will be his new secretary. A REAL CLIFF HANGER.
